The 2021 KBIS was held virtually. Nonetheless, more than a few manufacturers stepped up and introduced new products that will help homeowners, remodelers and builders create new kitchens that will be the envy of their neighborhoods. Here are a few of the products that wowed at 2021 KBIS.

Engineered countertops and backsplashes trended toward lighter colors responding to consumer demand for uplifting tones that provide a sense of optimism and cleanliness. New quartz and engineered countertops offer homeowners a range of warm, whites and marble looks. Concrete-looking engineered countertops were another KBIS trend that responds to the industrial motif that is extremely popular.
Touchless faucets will turn more than a few heads of customers. And not a moment too soon as many homeowners recognize that handling raw meat, chicken and fish in a kitchen can easily transmit bacteria and germs from surface to surface. Several of the new touchless faucets integrate with personal digital assistants and can be activate through apps with voice commands.
Two tone finishes and two texture faucets also trended at the 2021 KBIS. A number of new introductions featured a balance of rough and smooth textures, matte and polished finishes and warm and cool tones integrated into the same products. We saw faucets with matte black finishes and brass lever handles.
Manufacturers are upping the ante on storage and organization systems. Rarely could you open a drawer or cabinet door and not find inserts, rollouts, pullouts, dedicated dividers and in-cabinet lighting that enables homeowners to effectively organize all of their kitchen items effectively.

If you want to know how the new product introductions featured at KBIS can help you create the kitchen of your dreams, find out by calling us at (800) 693-4545 to visit our showrooms and meet a designer who's ready to start your project with you.

<![CDATA[We made it through COVID-19, now what?]]>Fri, 26 Feb 2021 18:30:12 GMThttp://cavalierkitchens.com/blog/we-made-it-through-covid-19-now-whatKitchen and bath remodeling activity is top of mind because many of our clients are spending almost all of their time in their homes. Many homeowners are making decisions to improve the quality of their kitchens, baths and other rooms in their homes to respond to the paradigm shift in the way they want and need their homes to function and perform.

The big trends we see include upgrading of kitchen cabinetry that occurs with almost every kitchen remodel. Our experience is indicative of national trends found by Houzz.com which reflect that 94% of kitchen remodels include cabinet upgrades. The need and desire for improved and enhanced storage are driving kitchen cabinet upgrades simply because homeowners in are spending more time in their kitchens preparing meals, eating, cleaning up, working, schooling and performing numerous other tasks. They simply need their kitchens to function and perform much better without necessarily having to increase the size of the kitchen.

Not surprisingly, we are seeing greater demand for storage solutions and pantries that include walk-in, free standing, pull out, built-in and wall pantries among others. Many homeowners are pleasantly shocked when we show them how they can create pantry space in their new kitchens without having to change the size or footprint.

Another trend is a movement toward enclosed kitchens versus open floor plans that flow into other rooms in the home. Houzz’s national trend survey found that open-concept floor plans fell 10% from 2018 to 2020. With children schooling from home and parents working from home, having an enclosed spaces that provide privacy and sound proofing are features that many homeowners find extremely attractive.

White shaker cabinets continue to be the most popular choices for homeowners. Neutral tone cabinets, countertops and wall coverings are most popular in our region. Gray, white and beige wall coverings are the most popular colors. However, there are many homeowners who favor a splash of color in their new kitchens. Blue and green tones are particularly popular for walls, countertops, backsplashes and even appliances. Black stainless appliances continue to gain in popularity as they off provide a wonderful contrast to white cabinets. Many of our clients also are selecting different cabinet colors for their islands that complement their cabinets, countertops, backsplashes. Blue and gray are among the more popular contrasting colors.

<![CDATA[Elements of a Spectacular Kitchen]]>Tue, 04 Jun 2019 18:50:36 GMThttp://cavalierkitchens.com/blog/elements-of-a-spectacular-kitchenFor 30 years we have been designing dream kitchens for our clients in Winchester and surround cities and counties. Our experience indicates that there are several key components essential to creating an individual's dream kitchen that too often are not given due consideration. These elements include the following:
 • Lighting
 • Seating
 • Organization and Storage

Good lighting makes a new kitchen more enjoyable, and bad lighting does just the opposite. Lighting can make or break how a new kitchen looks, feels and functions. It is equally as important as cabinets, countertops, appliances, backsplashes, flooring, sinks and faucets.

Effective lighting illuminates a space in layers using different components and strategies to paint the final picture. You can buy a functional $70 faucet in a home center, but that faucet will not add much to the beauty of the kitchen. A similar analogy holds true for lighting. Simply placing flush-mounted fixtures in the center of your ceiling can provide functional light, but it may do little to beautify the space, create a mood or evoke favorable emotional responses.

Layers of light contribute not only to the functionality of the kitchen but also to its design and beauty. Kitchens require ambient, task and accent lighting.

The goal of ambient lighting is to provide soft, general illumination without necessarily drawing attention to the light source. Ambient lighting provides enough light for safe navigation, cooking and washing dishes and helps to define the space.

Task lighting is employed to illuminate the activities that take place in the kitchen and provide light to prep, cook, bake, read recipes, easily find ingredients, watch television or do homework. Recent technological advances enable designers to integrate task lighting into drawers and cabinets by installing LED strip lighting or puck lights. LED lights are often installed under wall mounted cabinets to illuminate countertops.

Accent lighting is used to help keep the kitchen from looking ordinary or bland by highlighting open shelving, artwork, architectural details or other objects. A feature or work of art that draws the attention of the eye is referred to as a focal point. Light fixtures that provide light and shadows can make the space more inviting and comfortable. These may include track lights, recessed adjustable fixtures and spotlights. Accent lighting is subtle. A focused beam of light directed at a plant or highlighting a work of art, or a spotlight placed behind a plant and pointed upward through the leaves creates shadows on the wall that can make a kitchen more attractive.
Most homeowners want to have an abundance of seating in their new kitchens to entertain friends and family and to use the kitchen for additional purposes such as preparing meals, cleaning up, doing homework, bill paying, reading, relaxing and working from home. That why islands have become so popular. They serve multiple functions in addition to serving as a focal point.

A great kitchen must not only look out of this world, but it also must incorporate the best functionality that meets your needs. There is a vast array of storage and organizational tools ranging from drawer and cabinet organizers to pull out drawers and pantries that provide a place for all of your kitchen utensils, small appliances, plates and glassware, cookware and pots and pans.

What elements are necessary to make your dream kitchen a reality? Find out by calling us at (800) 693-4545 or visit our showrooms and meet a designer who's ready to start your project with you.

<![CDATA[Trends from the Kitchen & Bath Industry Show]]>Fri, 01 Mar 2019 14:45:15 GMThttp://cavalierkitchens.com/blog/trends-from-the-kitchen-bath-industry-show
The Kitchen & Bath Industry Show is the largest kitchen and bath design event in North America. KBIS reflects the trends that will influence kitchen design in the future and also demonstrates new technology that may enhance anyone’s lifestyle. Trends ranged from customizable faucets to bold-colored appliances and everything in between. It was hard not to be impressed by the continued technological connectivity and integration of kitchen appliances and bathroom fixtures.
One appliance manufacturer has incorporated sou vide cooking capabilities into a standard 36-inch range. Another manufacturer featured a dual fuel range that combines induction burners with gas countertops on the stove top and a dual oven cavity that enables home cooks to roast a giant turkey on one side and cook vegetables on the other. There are now ovens that allow you to cook by function, food or recipe and can even convert the stars of HGTVs "Worst Cooks In America" into gourmet chefs. Don't worry if you don't know how to cook or don't like to, there are ovens that ask you to dial in the attributes of what you want to cook, and you can set it and then forget it.

Some refrigerators allow you to check their contents from your smartphone while at the grocery store or any other place. Others feature computers that enable you to store recipes, make grocery lists or order via your home assistant. Zoned refrigeration continues to evolve and allows you to store foodstuffs and beverages at the perfect temperatures. Another trend is the growth of beverage stations. Whether you want a built-in coffee station or a wine dispenser, there is an appliance that can meet your needs.
Appliances finishes showed many pops of color. What we did not see a lot of was traditional stainless steel. Colorful hues dominated at the 2019 KBIS along with black stainless.
Storage solutions continue to evolve not only for the kitchen but also for the bathroom. We saw many shallow upper cabinets designed for the bath that can be recessed into the wall to avoid having to dedicate countertop space for storage. Another bath trend was the use of two to three different tiles in the bath, combining small-scale mosaics with 4 by 6-inch wall tiles and 12 by 24-inch floor tiles.

The ability to customize fixtures such as faucets and tubs is becoming much easier. We saw more air massage tubs than jetted tubs. At KBIS, we saw a few head-turning bathroom faucets. The first, a 3-D printed faucet from DXV by American Standard. The Blade is printed from stainless steel then hand finished. Water flow is activated by a sensor that turns on and off as a user approaches or leaves. Water flows from a circular opening in the edge of the faucet. Axor unveiled its MyEdition Customizable Cover Plates. You can select from six cover plates made from leather, wood, two types of marble and mirrored or black glass for the sink and tub faucets.
If you thought Corian was a countertop. Think again. The company introduced new material that can be used as a wall covering with undulating panels that are cut out like puzzle pieces for easy assembly on site that can be backlit to create a dramatic effect.

If you would like to discuss how you can take advantage of the latest trends and technology to make life easier and more rewarding for yourself and your family, call our showroom at (800) 693-4545 or visit us at 2537 Papermill Road, Winchester, VA 22601.

<![CDATA[The Tools to Keep Your New Year's Diet Resolutions]]>Thu, 14 Feb 2019 15:15:34 GMThttp://cavalierkitchens.com/blog/the-tools-to-keep-your-new-years-diet-resolutions
We know that many of our blog readers will make New Year’s resolutions to either improve their health, lose weight or both. There are numerous reasons to make weight loss resolutions. Losing weight makes you healthier, gives you more energy and helps to reduce fat and build muscle. If you subscribe to a particular diet or simply elect to eat healthier, there are certain kitchen tools that can help guide the way and make dieting easier.

One of the first appliances that people turn to when starting a diet is a blender. We prefer blenders with high-torque motors that can quickly and easily convert solids into liquids to create healthy shakes, smoothies and other drinks that the entire family can enjoy. Emersion or hand blenders enable you to mix, chop, whisk and blend, at the stove, countertop or anywhere else in the kitchen that you prepare meals. If you don't already have a hand blender, look for one with multiple speeds.

A food processor can slice, dice and chop foods in a matter of seconds. Food processors are great for making healthier snacks and appetizers such as fresh hummus or homemade granola. An air fryer gives you the taste and crunch of fried foods using approximately 75 percent less oil than a conventional fryer. An air fryer is a convection oven that circulates hot air around food to cook. Air fryers come in a variety of sizes. The largest of which can cook a meal for a family of four looking to reduce fat and calories.

Another cool gadget for dieting is a spiralizer that takes vegetables such as zucchini, squash and carrots and turns them into spaghetti. Cooking beef, duck and chicken in a rotisserie convection toaster oven will help reduce fat and calories. A slow cooker prepares food as its name implies slowly. Slow cooking preserves nutrients in food thereby making your meals healthier, tastier and easier to digest. A good quality kitchen scale can help with portion control. Portions are based on weight and not size. To get in the habit of eating the right portions, you need to weigh your food.

A brand new kitchen will make meal preparation easier and more enjoyable. We can help with that as well. Please call us at (800) 693-4545 or visit the largest kitchen and bath showrooms in the area at 2537 Papermill Road, Winchester, VA 22601 to determine how a new kitchen for your home can help you live a healthier and happier lifestyle.

<![CDATA[Six Design Secrets for a More Enjoyable and Functional Kitchen]]>Fri, 07 Dec 2018 13:14:06 GMThttp://cavalierkitchens.com/blog/six-design-secrets-for-a-more-enjoyable-and-functional-kitchenGreat kitchen design combines both form and function. From our design team, here are six tips for making your kitchen the envy of your neighborhood.
1. Choose Ceiling-High Cabinets
Ceiling-high cabinets are a great option for any kitchen, but they work especially well in smaller spaces. Cabinets that reach to the ceiling draw the eye upward, creating the illusion that the space is much larger than it actually is. Plus, ceiling-high cabinets provide additional storage space for cookware, small appliances, serving dishes and other items that are not used frequently.
2. Replace Existing Appliances
Believing that you can save on the cost of your renovation by keeping existing appliances is pennywise and dollar foolish. There are two main arguments for making an investment in new appliances. First, older appliances with new countertops, cabinets, hardware, etc. are likely to stick out like a sore thumb. Rarely, if ever, will existing appliances complement the new aesthetic that you want to achieve. Second, today’s appliances are more technologically sophisticated, energy-efficient and offer benefits and features that make meal preparation easier and more enjoyable.
3. Light Up Your Life
Install in-cabinet, in-drawer and under-cabinet lighting. Not only does today’s new LED lighting technology make it easier to illuminate work surfaces, installing lighting in drawers and cabinets makes it easier to find what you are looking for and offers a wow factor that is hard to refuse.
4. A Well Designed Kitchen Is An Organized Kitchen
One secret to designing a great kitchen is to account for your storage needs and desires in the initial planning phases. A storage plan will consider how often you cook, entertain and hold gatherings. A great kitchen must not only look out of this world, it also must incorporate the best functionality that meets your needs. An almost endless array of options is available to store cookware, food, utensils, countertop appliances (blenders, mixers, etc.), recycling containers and so on.
Specifying two-tiered drawers can maximize space in deep drawers. A top layer may be used for cutlery, below is a second drawer for dishes and below that is another drawer for pots and pans. These drawers within drawers slide individually with the top-drawer housing items used most often.
5. Choose a Pull-Out Pantry
Compared to traditional drawer and cabinet storage, pull-out pantries make it far easier to find what you are looking. If your pantry is wider than 16 inches, consider roll-out shelves as an alternative because the weight of the pantry may not be manageable.
6. Avoid Buyers’ Remorse
Space permitting, opt to install recycling and trash bins in a cabinet or drawer as opposed to leaving the them on floor of your new kitchen. This will contributes to a cleaner, more clutter-free and enjoyable space.

<![CDATA[Jewelry for Your Kitchen and Bath]]>Tue, 07 Aug 2018 17:19:40 GMThttp://cavalierkitchens.com/blog/jewelry-for-your-kitchen-and-bathHardware is the “jewelry” of cabinets and doors found in kitchens, bathrooms, laundry rooms and other locales within the home. Whether you are building a new home, renovating an existing one or looking to change the look of what you currently own, selecting the right cabinet hardware enables you to make a unique design statement.

Cabinet hardware too often is an afterthought that, without appropriate consideration, can compromise both the look of your home and the functionality of your kitchen and bath. Many would consider wearing sneakers with a tuxedo as inappropriate, so too is selecting plastic pulls for new kitchen or bath cabinetry. If not selected and specified properly, cabinet hardware becomes more noticeable because it is out of place with the rest of the home. Hardware should coordinate and complement everything in a kitchen or bath, from the faucets and appliances to shower systems, tubs and accessories.

Cabinet hardware can transform a mundane generic piece into something outstanding if the hardware is carefully integrated with a cabinet’s design, style and materials. To help you select the right hardware for your kitchen or bath remodel, here are the latest hardware trends.
Brass and gold are extremely popular, but in a new way. No longer is brass or gold limited to a bright yellow. Instead, manufacturers are offering softer and warmer tones of both brass and gold. We often recommend pairing these finishes with white and dark wood cabinets and surfaces. There is a blank palate that you can work with when you gravitate to brass and gold finished hardware. Selecting a gold finish enables you to make a unique design statement. Another reason why gold is so popular at the moment is that it enables our clients to elevate a design scheme with color.

We find that more and more of our clients want to remain in their homes for longer periods of time. They are looking to upgrade and improve their homes to be able to age in pace or accommodate the needs of other family members living with them. Beautiful cabinet and door hardware that is easy to grasp, pull, open and close serve both a functional and aesthetic need, especially for our clients who have limited mobility or are living with aging parents. The good news is that there are numerous options available that enable our clients to make distinctive design statements while simultaneously enjoying their home for many years to come.

Modern design has become increasingly popular trend. According to a study by Houzz.com, contemporary design was the second most popular design motif behind transitional. Contemporary hardware is characterized by clean lines and minimal adornment. Many contemporary pulls and knobs are finished in stainless steel.
Two toned finishes are also increasingly popular with our clients. Clients who mix and match finishes are best served if they select finishes with similar color temperatures. An example would be to pair an oil-rubbed bronze with a brushed gold.

Black is back in a new way. When clients select black, white or grey cabinet finishes, black hardware complements and contrasts those colors beautifully. Matte black finishes pair remarkably well in contemporary settings.

The industrial look is another hot trend in kitchen and bath design characterized by exposed brick, wooden beams and concrete floors and countertops.

If you are interested in replacing existing hardware in your home to improve the look and functionality give us a call at (800) 693-4545 or visit our showroom at 2537 Papermill Road, Winchester, VA to begin planning the space of your dreams.

<![CDATA[Preparing for a Showroom Visit]]>Fri, 06 Apr 2018 13:06:02 GMThttp://cavalierkitchens.com/blog/preparing-for-a-showroom-visitMost of our clients spend six months or longer conducting independent research before making an appointment to come to the showroom to discuss creating the kitchen of their dreams. We value our clients’ time. That’s why we offer the following advice to prepare for a showroom visit to not only save time, but also to ensure that our clients’ wants, needs and dreams are realized.

We know that the kitchen is the epicenter of the home, but the way that the kitchen is used varies greatly from one home to the next. Before you visit the showroom, consider who will use the space and how — will you use the space to prepare meals, entertain friends and family, etc.? Listing all of the uses and users enables your designer to not only determine how to meet your functionality requirements, but also why you are making the investment to renovate your home. The list of uses also enables us to determine the types and amount of lighting that you will need for reading, TV watching, baking, cooking, entertaining or just hanging out.

The size of the space is another critical factor. It’s best if you measure the length and width and bring those figures with you to the showroom. It will enable us to determine if an island is possible (one of the most requested features in a kitchen). If space is at a premium, a peninsula might be a fall back. Another important consideration is traffic flow. Your new kitchen should make it easier to prepare meals, eat, clean up and navigate through your kitchen without bumping into things or others. If you currently bump into other family members while in the kitchen, let us know, because that will help us develop the best solution for your project.

Make another list to identify all of the things that you want to store in your kitchen and their sizes. A well-designed kitchen is an organized kitchen. Most of our clients appreciate clean, clutter-free countertops. When we know the utensils, cutlery, plates, pots, pans, books, computers, appliances, etc. that you want at your fingertips, we can recommend the right storage solutions for your project.

Think about how you want the new space to feel every time you walk into your new kitchen and use it. What are your favorite colors and styles. Do you prefer to make big bold statements or rather lean towards serene environments? We encourage our clients to create idea books on Pinterest or Houzz.com and comment on the different pictures and photographs in them. Include information and pictures of appliances, faucets, sinks, lighting fixtures, cabinets, door hardware, tile, granite, stone or other materials you would like to use in your new kitchen. Once we know your preferences, we can develop the solutions that meet your needs and budgets.

Let us know what you like and would like to change about your existing space. It may be too small for your needs. If so, we can look to open up the kitchen to create more space and to make it appear more spacious. Adding windows or doors that allow natural light can change the look and feel of a room. Experienced designers know how to work with client preferences, keeping the functionality and look that you enjoy while developing solutions to eliminate your dislikes.

Don’t be afraid to have a budget in mind. We know that most clients are reticent to talk about budgets up front. Sometimes budgets are realistic and other times they are not. What you see on home improvement shows on television rarely compare to the real world because on TV they don’t account for labor and labor is typically 50 percent of the cost of a new kitchen or bath. Sharing your budget with our designers helps to set the tone, will save time and avoid having to change course midstream if the unexpected occurs.

Also consider how involved you want to be in your project. Do you want to be part involved in every detail or would you prefer to rely on your designer to develop solutions for your review and approval? Either option is fine, but to help your designer save you time and energy communicate this information up front.

If you need additional advice on how to prepare for your new kitchen or bath renovation, please give us a call at (800) 693-4545
or visit us at 2537 Papermill Road, Winchester, VA 22601.

<![CDATA[How Much Does a New Master Bathroom Cost?]]>Mon, 26 Mar 2018 15:40:57 GMThttp://cavalierkitchens.com/blog/how-much-does-a-new-master-bathroom-costHow Much Does a New Master Bathroom Cost?“How much?” is the number one question our clients ask before considering a bathroom remodel. And our answer is always the same, “It depends.” For a luxury master bath, the can range from a low of $35,000 to more than $100,000 at the upper end of the price scale.

Here are the factors that influence costs:
 • Area of the country
 • Size and shape of master bathroom
 • Scope of the renovation
 • Quality of materials and finishes selected
 • Cost of labor
Master bathroom renovations in major U.S. cities cost more than in secondary and rural markets simply because the cost of doing business and labor tend to be lower in rural and secondary markets. When you renovate a bathroom, there are a number of skilled trades that are involved, including flooring installers, plumbers, electricians, carpenters, wallcovering installers, lighting specialists and general contractors among others, whose expertise and skill sets can make or break any project.
Labor is the biggest expense of any bathroom renovation, and the bottom line on labor is affected by size and shape of the bath and scope of the project. Odd shaped and larger baths will generally be costlier than a conventional sized and shaped bath.

The scope of the renovation also affects the price.
 • Will you replace exactly what’s there with new product or do you plan to reconfigure space? Are you moving or adding windows or skylights?
 • Are you removing all wall coverings and taking the renovation down to the studs?
 • Do you need to move or relocate in-wall, in-floor and in-ceiling plumbing, electrical and ventilation?
 • Will the renovation force you to make unforeseen changes to comply with code?
 • Will you need a specialist to install shower doors, a steam system, tile, flooring or cabinetry?
 • Do you want storage solutions that will make your life easier and your new bath more enjoyable?
 • Will you have to or want to move your existing toilet location?
 • Will you need special plumbing and electrical for the new toilet, bidet, bidet seat, sink, faucets, shower systems, tub systems or storage solutions?
 • Are you interested in outfitting your space with original designed fixtures?
 • How important is the quality of floor and wall coverings?
 • How environmentally efficient do you want your new bath to be?
 • Who plans to use the bathroom, how often and when?
 • How long do you plan to live in your home?
When you plan your bath renovation, generally there are more questions than answers. One surefire way to control costs is to have a well thought out plan that answers most of the questions before a single nail is hammered. Our showroom professionals design baths every day and know what questions to ask to assure that your needs and dreams are met – give us a call at (800) 693-4545 or visit our showroom at 2537 Papermill Road, Winchester, VA to begin planning the space of your dreams.

<![CDATA[Custom Closet Design: 7 Details to Consider]]>Thu, 22 Feb 2018 13:12:47 GMThttp://cavalierkitchens.com/blog/custom-closet-design-7-details-to-considerCustom closet design isn’t for the faint of heart. It takes time to itemize your belongings and create an efficient and organized wardrobe. The best approach is to assess your storage needs before meeting with your designer. Here are seven guidelines to follow if you’re lucky enough to be piecing together a new dream closet.
1. Know the dimensions of your clothes. This is a big one, whether you’re planning to store clothes via hanging racks or shelves. You and your designer want to make sure you’re getting the best possible storage solution for your clothing.

One thing to be aware of is the width of your clothes. The depth of your closet cabinets and panels will range from 14 inches to 24 inches. Most clothing items, including shirts, blouses, jackets and coats, will fit inside a 24-inch-deep area. Anything with less depth won’t always fit your clothing, which means your shirts and blouses will protrude. Plan accordingly, especially if you have an island.

You and your designer will base your new closet around the types of clothing you have. Here are a few clothing dimensions you should know:
 • Folded sweaters and shirts require 9 to 15 inches of linear space each.
 • Coats can require up to 68 inches of vertical space.
 • Pants and jeans require up to 50 inches of vertical space (about half of that when folded).
 • Skirts require up to 45 inches of vertical space.2
2. Include the right amount of double- and single-hang sections. Evaluate your wardrobe and take inventory of what you own. Do you have more blouses than dresses? Do you own any large winter coats and jackets? Whether to include more double hangs or single hangs will hinge on your clothing collection. Shirts, blouses and slacks belong on double hangs, while dresses and long coats and jackets normally need single hangs.

If you have a lot of dresses and evening gowns, tally them up so you know how much single-hang space you need. If you don’t have many (or any at all), use only double-hang sections. This will help you maximize your storage space.

Men’s closet spaces normally don’t require many, if any, single-hang sections (exceptions are for hunting gear or long coats). Adding more double-hang sections will better accommodate a wardrobe composed of mostly dress shirts and slacks.

3. Figure out the best solution for corners. As tricky as corners are in general, they manage to be even more complicated in closets. There’s usually less space to work with.

The best approach is to utilize as much space as possible; you can never have enough storage for your clothing. Corner shelves allow you to do just that. You can use them to hang clothes or store purses and suitcases. They also create a more seamless closet design.

Suffice it to say, you might not have the space for a corner shelf. If not, it’s perfectly acceptable to have your panel overlap the adjacent wall (as in the closet above). While the resulting corner space may not be super easy to access, you won’t be wasting any storage space. You can hang seasonal attire like winter coats in these hidden spots.

4. If you have room, consider an island. Islands are a dream addition to any walk-in closet. But the spacing has to be right. A 36-inch walkway on each side of the island is ideal, but you can get by with 30-inch or 24-inch walkways if you’re willing to sacrifice a bit of clearance space. This means you need at least 10 feet of linear space (12 feet to have 36-inch walkways). The more clearance space for islands with pullout drawers, the better.

5. Make the shoes fit. If you’re including a shoe rack, saving space is just one part of the challenge. The other? Making sure your shelves and cubbies are big enough to comfortably store your shoe collection.

A pair of women’s shoes generally measures anywhere from 5½ to 10 inches wide, while a men’s pair is 6½ to 10½ inches wide. There should be enough linear space to house the pairs you own (or at least the pairs you wear often). The best rule of thumb is to allow 7 to 12 inches of space per pair.

If you own boots, ensure that some of your shelves and cubbies are high enough to fit them. Ankle-high boots normally start at 3 inches high, while midcalf and knee-high boots can range from 9 to 17 inches high.

6. Find room for a bench. If you have the luxury of a space like this, a place to sit provides a nice spot to put on your shoes, button up your shirts and so forth.

The easiest and perhaps most affordable option is a free-standing bench. You can place it next to your island or along an unused wall in your closet.

Built-in benches are a natural fit below windows, especially higher windows. Include a drawer to add a little extra storage space.

7. Don’t forget about your accessories. No household is short on accessories, be they purses, jewelry, ties or belts. It helps to create an organized space for these belongings too.

Belt and tie racks can be compact and mounted to any dead space you may have along walls. You may also want racks to hang your purses on to more quickly put your outfits together.

Including a jewelry tray in one of your drawers is also an option. You can put trays in your island or in a drawer in or near a vanity.
